Our Story
Pet Rest Memorial Park was started in December 1977 by a father-and-son team of Floyd and Charles Smith. They opened the five-acre tract to meet the demand of pet burial.
While Charles Smith was a funeral director at Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, he would receive numerous requests for such pet rest services.
Floyd Smith was retired and enjoyed staying occupied, taking care of the day-to-day operations of the pet cemetery. This business was the first of its kind in Dallas County.
Over the years, Pet Rest Memorial Park has expanded with the addition of a crematory run by Rick White. Demand for pet burial and cremation services have seen a steady rise with population growth in the Dallas – Fort Worth metroplex.
As quoted in the Garland Daily News on March 27, 1978, Charles Smith said "More and more people are deciding not to have children because of economic or personal reasons. So in order to have some type of companionship, they're raising pets."
Charles added, "There are more veterinarians in Garland than there are pediatricians." Apartment living has contributed much to the demand of the business, as apartment dwellers cannot bury their deceased pets at home.
The products offered in 1977 included a line of caskets, vaults, concrete boxes and memorials of bronze and granite. The line of products has expanded over the years.
